But you might be wondering, why do they fart? In order to better understand this concept, we need to take a look at our feline physiology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats have a range of microflora inhabiting their gastrointestinal tract. Many of this microflora include species from families such as bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protozoa. In herbivores, the role of this microflora is to break down and ferment food that enters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In carnivores, such as your cat, the microflora aids to help destroy pathogenic bacteria that may be present, aids in creating vitamins for the body and possibly aids in the breakdown of certain food matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As these microflorae have a lot of biological and physiological roles, they tend to conduct various chemical reactions that release gases as an end-product. This is what causes a cat to fart!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The build-up of these gases created by microflora in the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s In a Cat&#8217;s Fart? \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No study has been done to test the variable amount of gases found in feline farting. Nevertheless, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25414978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25414978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests that feline microflora may be most similar to human and canine microflora.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, through extrapolated information it can be speculated that the following gases are found in your cat&#8217;s farts: Hydrogen gas, small amounts of methane, Nitrogen gas, Carbon Dioxide, small amounts of Oxygen, and various sulfide-based gases that causes the stinky smell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, another major component of feline gas is simply excess gas that may be consumed when your cat takes a few bites of their food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do Cats Fart<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats fart for many reasons, some of the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wagwalking.com\/cat\/condition\/gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common causes <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of gas buildup include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial or viral infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infestation of gastrointestinal parasites<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory bowel disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating too much too fast<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet, allergy and an inability to digest food.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this list, it&#8217;s been observed that changes in diet seem to be a common cause owners face with their gassy kitty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, we all know that feeding your cat dairy products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catkingpin.com\/can-cats-eat-yogurt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yogurt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catkingpin.com\/can-kittens-drink-goat-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goat\u2019s milk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or cheese etc. can cause gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats tend to lose the enzyme lactase as they grow older. This enzyme is important for catalyzing a reaction which breaks down lactose into sugars. Owners who feed cats dairy-rich diets can disrupt their cat&#8217;s intestinal tract as once lactose passes through the colon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain bacteria will begin to ferment the milk which will generate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> high levels of gas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your cat&#8217;s body resulting in the production of carbon dioxide. The high levels of protein found in milk are what may lead to a stinkier fart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important common dietary factor may be associated with feeding cats grain and a corn-based diet. Corn-based diets are high in starch and fiber. Feeding diets high in corn can result in the increased fermentation of starch in the colon, thus resulting in the gas build up. In my previous article, I\u2019ve already discussed the detrimental effects excessive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catkingpin.com\/can-cats-eat-corn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corn can have in a cats diet.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same principle can be implied when feeding cats kibble that is high in complex carbohydrates or high in fiber.
